The G 310 R and G 310 GS are the two small-capacity motorcycles that were supposed to help BMW Motorrad garner the figures for growth that it projected. India, the largest two-wheeler market in the world, was a big part of those plans. But now BMW has done an about-face and has said that the 310 twins will not be about numbers, but about quality – something that BMW Motorrad is known for in markets globally.
The specs don’t make your eyes pop; the 313cc single-cylinder engine has a four-valve head and is liquid cooled. It generates 33bhp and 28Nm, and uses chain drive through a six-speed gearbox. The front forks are upside down units and sport radial brake callipers that are fixed in front, and floating at the rear, just like KTM’s Dukes. It has a 12 litre fuel tank and a 145kph top speed. Tyre sizes also are familiar: 110/70-17 front and 150/60-17 rear. ABS is present.
The company has committed to launching the G 310 R by the festive season this year, and it will compete with the KTM 390 Duke directly, while the Benelli TNT25 and Kawasaki Z250 are also competitors. The reputation the company has for quality has allowed it to charge a premium for its products. So one can expect to spot BMW bikes very rarely, even the 310s.
