Naxals blow up bus in Dantewada; civilians among 40 killed
Dantewada: At least 40 people, including several police officers and civilians, were killed on Monday when Maoists blew up a bus in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district.
The private bus was carrying passengers from Gadiras to Bhusaras in Dantewada district. It was blown up at around 4.45 pm by Maoists in Sukma town using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Reports said among those killed were Special Police Officers (SPOs) of the Chhattisgarh Police.
State Home Minister Nanki Ram Kanwar confirmed the presence of SPOs on the bus. The SPOs are civilians assisting police in fighting the Naxals and those believed killed in today’s brazen attack were attached to Dantewada police.
The IED was planted on a metalled road and detonated by the Left-wing extremists using a remote control device.
The exact number of passengers traveling on the bus has yet to be ascertained.
The Union Home Ministry has condemned the attack, and Home Minister P Chidambaram is expected to issue a statement on the incident soon.
The attack comes little over a month after Maoists, in one of their biggest attack ever on security forces, killed 76 CRPF personnel in Dantewada.
Today’s attack may prove to be the biggest attack in terms of civilian casualties. It came a day before the Maoists’ call for a 48-hour bandh in five states, including Chhattisgarh, from Tuesday in protest against the security operations launched against them by the Centre.
