Italian marines allowed to visit home for Christmas
Two Italian marines accused of accused of killing two Indian fishermen, were on Thursday allowed to return home for Christmas by the Kerala High Court.
The marines, who are facing trial for murder charges, have been permitted to go to Italy for two weeks for celebrating Christmas, subject to Centre’s clearance.
Italian nationals named Latorre Massimillano and Salvatore Girone were arrested from vessel named ‘Enrica Lexie’ in February for shooting dead two Indian fishermen who they mistook as pirates.
Currently on bail, the two marines had presented a plea in Kerala High Court to facilitate their visit to Italy for Christmas celebrations.
Italy’s defence minister Giampaolo Di Paolo had on Sunday visited the two marines —Massimiliano Latore and Salvatore Girone — and also made an appeal for allowing them to return to Italy for Christmas.
Earlier, the Kerala government had opposed the plea by the marines, saying it would “torpedo” the trial.
