Gold prices fell by Rs 168 to Rs 27,516 per ten grams in futures trade Thursday as market players offloaded their positions, moving in tandem with their global counterparts .

At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in June dropped by Rs 168 to Rs 27,516 per ten grams as against its previous closing level of 27,684.

Similarly, silver for delivery in July decreased by Rs 339 to Rs 43,889 per kg compared to Rs 44,228 on Wednesday.

Gold prices in overseas markets, which normally set price trend on the domestic front, fell today as India’s move to hike import duty on the metal for the second time this year raised concerns about demand in the world’s biggest bullion consumer.

Losses, however, were capped by strong demand in world No.2 consumer China and on hopes the US Federal Reserve would stick with its bond purchases for now following indications of a still-soft US job market.

Spot gold last traded down USD 3.60 or 0.26 percent at USD 1,400.10 per ounce. It had gained slightly yesterday as investors looked for safer assets after a private US jobs reading fell short of expectations.

In New York, gold for August delivery rose USD 1.30, or 0.1 percent to settle at USD 1,398.50 an ounce after hitting a high of around USD 1,410 on the Comex division of the NYMEX.

Silver for July delivery also settled up 6 cents, or 0.3 percent at USD 22.47 an ounce.

Gold prices sank to around USD 1,321 on April 16, the lowest in more than two years, in a sell-off that surprised ardent gold investors and bulls.

In Delhi spot market, gold prices zoomed to a five-week high rising by Rs 430 to Rs 28,090 per 10 grams on increased stockists buying, following government decision to hike import duty on the precious metal amid firm global cues.

Chennai

Standard gold price edged lower by Rs 20 to Rs 27,270 per ten grams as against its previous close of Rs 27,290.

Silver also declined by Rs 140 to Rs 44,265 per kg from Rs 44,405.

Delhi

In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 percent purity shot up by Rs 430 each to Rs 28,090 and Rs 27,890 per 10 grams, respectively, a level last seen on April 29. Sovereigns added Rs 100 to Rs 24,200 per piece of eight grams.

However, silver ready fell by Rs 60 to Rs 44,540 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 10 to Rs 43,970 per kg. Silver coins spurted by Rs 2,000 to Rs 79,000 for buying and Rs 80,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Mumbai

Standard gold of 99.5 percent purity rose by Rs 75 to finish at Rs 27,105 per 10 gm from Tuesday’s closing level of Rs 27,030.

Pure gold of 99.9 percent purity also firmed up by Rs 75 to end at Rs 27,230 per 10 gm from Rs 27,155.

Silver ready (.999 fineness), however softened by Rs 5 to close at Rs 44,995 per kg from Rs 45,000 yesterday.

Gold ETF

Holdings of New York’s SPDR Gold Trust, the largest gold-backed exchange-traded-fund, remained unchanged on Monday, showing investors’ growing confidence in the metal. The near-three week decline in the holdings came to a stop last Wednesday.
