What and where are the IPL player auctions?

On January 8 and 9 in Bangalore, cricketers will be auctioned to 10 teams who will participate in the fourth edition of the IPL in 2011.

How many teams are part of the auction?

Ten teams including this year’s new entries Pune Warriors and Kochi will participate in the player auction for IPL 4. Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab have also been cleared by the Bombay High Court.

How many matches will be played in the fourth edition of the IPL?

74 matches will be played in IPL 4 during April-May 2011. This includes 70 league matches, three play-offs and one final.

Dude, where’s my semi-final?

In place of semi-finals, the top four teams (1, 2, 3 and 4) will play three games in this way:

* Play-off A – 1 vs 2, winner goes into final.
* Play-off B – 3 vs 4, winner plays winner of A; loser goes home
* Play-off C – Loser of A and winner of B; winner goes into final; loser goes home.

What else is different in 2011?

The 10 teams are divided into two groups of five, A and B. In each group, teams will play eight matches each against the other four, one match home and one away.
Next, each team from Group A will play one game each against four teams and two games against the fifth team of Group B. So each team will play 8+4+2=14 league games.

How many players will be auctioned on January 8 and 9?

At least 421 cricketers expressed their desire to be part of the IPL, but only 350 were selected for the auction. Post Anil Kumble’s pull-out, a total of 349 players will be auctioned over two days.

Which players have been retained by their franchise and won’t be auctioned?

The following players have been retained by the franchises:

* Mumbai Indians – Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga
* Chennai Super Kings – MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay, Albie Morkel
* Rajasthan Royals – Shane Warne, Shane Watson
* Delhi Daredevils – Virender Sehwag
* Royal Challengers Bangalore – Virat Kohli

How much money can each team spend at the auction?

The three teams that haven’t retained any players – Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knightriders and Deccan Chargers, and two new teams Pune Warriors and Kochi will have $9 million dollars to spend during the auction.

Delhi and Bangalore will each have $7.2 million to spend. Rajasthan Royals have $5.9 million while Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, who have retained four players, will have only $4.5 million.

What is the highest reserve price for this year’s auction and how many players will be included in the band?

At least 22 players have been included for the highest reserve price at $400,000. This includes players like Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, James Anderson, Kevin Pietersen, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and many more.

Is base price the final amount for which the franchise will buy a player?

No, not necessarily. During previous auctions, players were bought at more than double their base price. The bidding starts at the base price.

Is there a system of trading window like summer/winter transfers in EPL?

No.

What’s different from previous auctions?

Uncapped Indian players are not a part of the auction list. This time franchisees will be allowed to sign on uncapped players through an agreement between the franchise, player and IPL post the auction.

Is the system of icon players still prevalent?

The system was done away with after IPL 3. Previous Icon players like Ganguly, Dravid and Yuvraj are all up for auction this time.

Who are the notable absentees this season?

Some of the notable absentees are the Australian trio of Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson. Former players who have called it a day this time around include Anil Kumble, Matthew Hayden, Glenn McGrath and Andrew Flintoff.

What are the rules for an IPL team/squad formation?

A team/squad must consist of a minimum of 16 players plus a coach and physiotherapist. The squad can include no more than 10 non-Indian players, and four in the playing XI. A minimum of eight local players and two players from the BCCI under-22 pool must be included in each squad.

How does IPL make money/profit?

The IPL starts making their money right when the auction starts. The broadcasting rights for the auction are sold. Then come the title sponsorship (DLF), corporate sponsorship and umpire sponsorship. Twenty per cent of the tickets sold are billed to the IPL.

How is the income distributed?

The franchises get a share of broadcasting money, sponsorship money and some share of the ticket money.

How does the franchise make money/source of income?

The advertisements inside the stadium. Trading of players with other franchises. They also share the income from broadcast rights, sponsorship money and tickets sale with the IPL.
